Ce dernier a sept fils, et c\u2019est le plus jeune qui est choisi car <em>\u00ab\u00a0l&rsquo;homme voit ce qui frappe les yeux, mais le Seigneur voit au c\u0153ur<\/em><a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a>.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Alors qu\u2019il ravitaille ses fr\u00e8res qui sont \u00e0 la guerre, David voit que l\u2019arm\u00e9e de Sa\u00fcl est terroris\u00e9e par un g\u00e9ant philistin qui se propose d\u2019affronter en duel un H\u00e9breu. Il se porte volontaire pour le combattre. On lui offre une armure et une lourde \u00e9p\u00e9e, mais il pr\u00e9f\u00e8re sa tenue de berger et c\u2019est avec sa simple fronde qu\u2019il terrasse le g\u00e9ant Goliath.<\/p>\n<p>Engag\u00e9 au service du roi, ce dernier ne supporte pas son succ\u00e8s. David est oblig\u00e9 de fuir. \u00c0 deux reprises, il a la possibilit\u00e9 de tuer Sa\u00fcl qui veut le mettre \u00e0 mort, mais il l\u2019\u00e9pargne car il ne veut pas porter la main sur le roi.<\/p>\n<p>Apr\u00e8s le suicide de Sa\u00fcl, David f\u00e9d\u00e8re les douze tribus d\u2019Isra\u00ebl et il devient le roi incontest\u00e9 des H\u00e9breux. Il \u00e9tablit sa capitale \u00e0 J\u00e9rusalem qui prend le nom de cit\u00e9 de David.<\/p>\n<p>Arriv\u00e9 au sommet de la gloire, David a encore un projet\u00a0: construire un temple pour Dieu, mais ce dernier refuse car le roi a trop de sang sur les mains<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a>. D\u00e9sesp\u00e9r\u00e9 par ce refus, David n\u2019accompagne plus ses hommes \u00e0 la guerre. Un soir, il s\u2019ennuie sur la terrasse de son palais lorsqu\u2019il aper\u00e7oit une femme qui prend un bain, c\u2019est Bethsab\u00e9e, l\u2019\u00e9pouse d\u2019un de ses officiers qui est au front. Il la fait venir dans sa chambre et couche avec elle. Quelques semaines plus tard, elle lui fait savoir qu\u2019elle attend un enfant. David se d\u00e9brouille pour faire tuer son mari et il \u00e9pouse sa ma\u00eetresse. Un proph\u00e8te est envoy\u00e9 \u00e0 David pour d\u00e9noncer son p\u00e9ch\u00e9. L\u2019enfant meurt en bas \u00e2ge. Bethsab\u00e9e attend un autre enfant, ce sera Salomon.<\/p>\n<p>La fin du r\u00e8gne de David est obscurcie par la rivalit\u00e9 entre ses fils issus de plusieurs lits. Absalom se r\u00e9volte contre son p\u00e8re, mais il est tu\u00e9 dans une bataille contre l\u2019arm\u00e9e qui est rest\u00e9e fid\u00e8le \u00e0 David.
